George Maes Profile Photo

Born in Belgium, Maes immigrated to Canada as a young boy and has spent most of his life in eastern Canada. Two cross country tours and several years on the west coast have broadened hi perspective on the beauty and vastness of this country, a perspective that he emotes through powerful bold strokes. Maes had the opportunity to study at Concordia University in Montreal under the tutelage of Armand Tatossian.

George Maes is a student of contemporary and expressionist art, who draws on his love of nature to apply rich and vibrant colours to canvas in his painting. His works portray a preference for broad gestures and freedom of movement. Colour and freedom of the movement have always been Maes passionate tools for producing the images of his perception of nature’s beauty. In both his contemporary and expressionist landscape paintings, with unrestricted bold strokes, and liberal application of vibrant colours, Maes strives to reveal the emotions and inspiration he derived from his many forays through the Gatineau Hills and surrounding area.

Painting thickly in oil, with endless possibilities of movement and expression, allows Maes to bring life to his canvas. His feelings and personal interpretations are of nature itself.

George’s work is on display at Koyman Galleries in Ottawa, Ontario.
